Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation
Advanced technology to support muscle recovery — non-invasive NMES used alongside hands-on physiotherapy.
About the service
What is neuromuscular electrical stimulation?
Neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) is a non-invasive therapy that uses small electrical impulses delivered through electrodes placed on the skin to cause targeted muscles to contract. This can help maintain or rebuild muscle mass, improve motor control, and reduce spasticity in people with neurological conditions.
NMES works by mimicking the signals the nervous system sends to muscles, helping to retrain the connection between the brain and the body. It is used alongside hands-on physiotherapy to accelerate recovery and improve function — not as a standalone treatment.
Please call our team to learn more about whether NMES is appropriate for your situation. We are happy to discuss how it might fit into your broader physiotherapy program before you book.

In practice
How does NMES work in practice?
NMES is always used as part of a broader physiotherapy program. Here is what you can expect when it is incorporated into your treatment.
Assessment and suitability
Before using NMES, we carry out a thorough assessment to determine whether it is appropriate for your condition and goals. There are some contraindications — such as pacemakers or certain skin conditions — that we will discuss with you.
Electrode placement
Small adhesive electrodes are placed on the skin over the target muscle group. The placement is precise and based on your anatomy and the specific muscles we are working to activate or retrain.
Stimulation and active exercise
The device delivers gentle electrical impulses that cause the muscle to contract. In most cases, you will be asked to actively try to contract the muscle at the same time — this combination of electrical and voluntary effort produces the best outcomes.
Integration with physiotherapy
NMES sessions are integrated with your broader physiotherapy program. We use it to complement hands-on therapy, exercise, and other techniques — not as a replacement for active rehabilitation.
NMES is generally well tolerated and most people find it comfortable. The sensation is often described as a tingling or buzzing feeling. We adjust the intensity to ensure it is effective but not uncomfortable.

Referring a patient
Make a referral
We welcome referrals from GPs, neurologists, paediatricians, and other allied health professionals. Getting in touch is straightforward.
Get in touch
Email or call us with the patient's name, diagnosis, and what you are hoping NMES can help with. No formal referral form is required.
We will follow up
Our team will contact the patient or their family directly to discuss their needs and determine whether NMES is appropriate as part of their physiotherapy program.
Ongoing communication
With consent, we will keep you updated on progress and can provide written reports for NDIS reviews, GP management plans, or specialist reviews.
